Joan Borsten is the co-founder with her husband, Oleg Vidov, of the Malibu Beach Recovery Center, an alcohol and drug treatment facility based on neuroscience. She served as CEO from 2007, eventually expanded operations to include a women’s only facility in West Los Angeles. Both treatment centers and an affiliated Intensive Outpatient Program were acquired by RiverMend Health in June 2014. Since then Joan has continued the advocacy work she began in 2009 for California’s proud network of addiction treatment facilities.
The first cause she took on with the help of her alumni, while still an owner of Malibu Beach Recovery Center, was helping State Senator Mark DeSaulnier pass SB 1071 which provided funding for California’s online real time prescription drug database that allows medical professionals to know if a patient is doctor shopping or pharmacy hopping for scheduled drugs. She then moved to Blue Cross Checks to Providers, Underpayments to California’s Out-of-Network Addiction Facilities by for profit databases, and the Health Net Audit.
